Happy New Year!

I hope everyone enjoyed the break; here is what we will be doing in class this month.

In Language Arts we are working on main ideas, cause and effect. The ELA Test is right around the spring corner and we will be doing test prep. The class will also be working on identifying the main idea and supporting details with test like questions for H.W.  We love homophones like eye and I, or maid and made. Our daily journals are full of them.

In Math we are working on subtraction of 4 digit numbers with regrouping.   We will also work on subtracting money as well as giving change back.  Words that we are using are “difference, subtraction and operation”.  Ask your child what they mean. Multiplication tables to 5x should be to the automatic level by 2/1. Math has us using temperature and the always difficult topic of measuring to the ½ inch. Try some measuring at home!

In Social Studies we are working on Communities and we will finish a unit on the Chinese’s New Year. We also hope to have a guest performance with dragon dancers!  We have learned about the customs and traditions of many countries. We discovered their needs and wants.

In Science we are finishing our unit on buoyancy!  We will be investigating how things float and sink.  We will be looking at the different properties and characteristics of various materials. Students will investigate what makes a good cargo boat. Students will also design, make and test how much cargo their boat can hold! Next, we will be studying sound!

We do try to go out daily, unless it gets too   cold. Please have your child dress WARMLY!  Hats, boots, mittens, and snow pants help them to stay warm so they can go out and get some fresh air.

Dates to Know and Remember

Martian Luther King Jr. Day 1/16 (No School)

Report Cards are 1/25

No class birthdays this month.

Many thanks to the parents who helped with our Celebration around the World.   The students had a wonderful time going to Africa, Italy, England, France, and China. An extra treat was learning about Hanukkah. Our tree was from the Barrett family---thanks.

Would you like to be a Mystery Reader for our classroom? Just pick a favorite book and read to third graders for about 10 minutes. Send me a note on the date and time you would like to come.….shhhhhhhhh it’s a surprise,
