On fire prevention day we had 2 special activities. We had the fire truck races and the safety match game. The fire trucks were created out of dryer boxes. Fire trucks were painted on the sides and fronts of the boxes. The bottom and back of the box were cut away and a hole was cut in the top. 2 Straps were attached to go over the students shoulders. Students were divided into two teams. The first student would run to the truck and crawl in the back. Once in the box they would stand up placing the straps over their shoulders. Students would then run a course, exit the truck, take water (blue ball) and throw it at the fire (foam pins). The student then retrieves the ball, crawls back in the fire truck, and runs the course back to his/her team. Pictures are of Mrs. Keys first grade class and Mrs. Aunchman’s Kindergarten.

Fit-opoly is a variation of the popular board game, Monopoly. Students are divided into 4 teams with each team having their own color coded game piece and dice. The game board is comprised of space forming a rectangle. The four corners are color coded "GO" spaces one for each team. All other spaces have an exercise listed in them (crunches, push ups, step ups, squat thrusts,...). Students roll the dice and move their game piece. Students then perform the exercise that is on that space and go tag the next person on their team. When a game piece lands on another teams "GO" space that team must draw a "healthy living" card. Some of these cards reward a team with another roll or with fit-opoly money or both (i.e. You drank milk instead of soda..collect $100) and others penalize the team (i.e. You sat inside playing video games all day..go back 3 spaces). Each time a team passes their own colored "GO" square they collect $200. At the end of the game, teams are asked to count their money and see if they met the goal of $1000.

The healthy Heart circuit is an
obstacle course that teaches and re-enacts the cardio vascular system.
Students begin in an area of the gym (the lungs) and perform an
exercise..crunches, push ups, squat thrusts, or jump rope. When the
student finishes his/her exercise they pick up a red ball (oxygen) and proceed
to through a tunnel (pulmonary vein) to the center of the gym where 4 hula
hoops (representing the 4 chambers of the heart) are laid out. The
student jumps into and out of 2 of the hoops and proceeds through a series of 3
standing hula hoops (arteries)..each hoop progressively getting smaller.
After coming out of the last hula hoop the student must then crawl under 2 low
hurdles (capillaries). Once the student has cleared the last hurdle they
drop the red ball in the appropriate bucket and pick up a blue ball (carbon
dioxide). The student then proceeds under 2 low hurdles and 3 standing
hula hoops (veins) which progressively get larger, back to the center of the
gym. The student jumps in and out of the hoops in the center of the gym
(heart) and then proceeds through another tunnel (pulmonary artery) to the
starting area (lungs) and deposits the blue ball (carbon dioxide) in the
correct
bucket and the
course begins anew.

Hula
Huts is a team building/problem solving activity. There are 2 parts to
the challenge. First, students, in groups of 5 or 6, have to construct
the hula hut out of the 6 hula hoops. Second, once the hut is constructed
each student in the group must pass in one side of the hut and out the
other. Students are not allowed to hold onto or fix the hut during this
process. The activity can be made more difficult by not
allowing
students to use the same path through as another teammate did.
