What's Happening

Homework

Texts:  Perrine, L.  Literature: Structure, Sound and Sense (referred to as “Text”)

Short Stories and poems – ongoing reading

Using a variety of short stories and poems by both traditional and contemporary writers, we will engage in analytical discussions and write compositions addressing the author’s use of plot, character, setting, point of view, symbolism, theme, style, irony, tone, and devices unique to certain styles of poetry (including diction, tone, imagery, metrics).

Fiction and Drama

We will look at fiction and drama and the elements employed by the novelist and playwright to reveal a work’s meaning.  The literary techniques and devices discussed last year will be further analyzed and developed at this time through essays and discussion.

Readings will include (this list is subject to editing):

Life of Pi – Yann Martel (summer reading)

Their Eyes Were Watching God – Zora Neale Hurston

The Sound and the Fury – William Faulkner

A Prayer for Owen Meany – John Irving

Heart of Darkness – Joseph Conrad

“The Awakening” – Kate Chopin

The Road – Cormac McCarthy

A Confederacy of Dunces – John Kennedy Toole

Oedipus - Sophocles

Othello - Shakespeare

Death of a Salesman - Miller

Waiting for Godot -  Beckett

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead - Stoppard

Poetry

Poem analysis and interpretation will be on-going during the year.  We will work at developing a “comfort level” with the elements of poetry, including: diction, tone, imagery, figurative language, and metrics.  Readings will include primarily British and American traditional and contemporary poets.
