Here’s some breaking news about Earth Day and Reading in the United States!

Authors for Earth Day

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

On Earth Day, April 22, 2010, a U.S. national coalition of award-winning children’s book authors and illustrators will participate in Authors For Earth Day (A4ED) to “support conservation through literacy” in schools from California to New York. Their special one-day events raise money for conservation organizations while boosting children’s environmental awareness. Newbery winner Jerry Spinelli and his wordsmith wife Eileen kicked off A4ED’s inaugural year with a generous donation to Bat Conservation International.

Participating authors include Bruce Hale, Debbie Dadey, Nancy Castaldo, and Barbara Gowan. Author-illustrator Brooke Bessesen, event founder, conceived of A4ED in 2008 and has now set up the infrastructure and rallied enough authors to launch the event. Authors for Earth Day supports kids, education, and conservation.
