Fitness Club

The idea of fitness club started several years ago. Some girls were looking to be active in the winter, but didn’t want to play basketball. What started with less than 10 girls has now grown to be a co-ed activity with over 20 participants.

We meet every Tues. and Thurs.,starting in mid November and running through the winter until the spring sports seasons begin. Each day we do some cardio work and some strength training. For cardio the kids run the halls, ride exercise bikes, use jump ropes, run stair circuits, or use the plyometric boxes.  With strength training I set up 10-12 different stations. Once these stations are explained to the kids, each kid starts at a station, works hard for 1 minute, and then we rotate stations so each kid makes it to each station. Stations include exercises with dumbbells, stability balls, stretch bands, and exercise machines we have in the weight room. Each day there are stations that include abdominal/core work, leg and arm exercises, shoulder, back and chest exercises.

Anyone is welcome to join at any time. Attendance is not mandatory. We do this for fun and to get into better shape.

Just an update on how our group is doing:

We’ve been outside skiing once. We would have liked to have gone more but Mother Nature took away the snow. If we get some more, we will go again.

We’ve also gone to the Fitness Connection once and have plans to go a few more times. Ruth Jameson and Theresa Rushinski set up some circuit training as well as introducing the kids to the weight equipment and cardio equipment that they have. I’ve wanted the kids to be comfortable using a variety of fitness equipment,(stability balls, medicine ball, tubing, dumbbells, etc) so that when they leave Salem they can feel comfortable walking into the gym, on their campus or in their town, and working out.
