Welcome to the
Salem Elementary School Art Page.

As
we begin 2012, Sixth grade students are well into their year-long survey of the
history of art around the world. We’ve studied prehistoric art, ancient
Egyptian art, ancient Greek art and architecture, and now we’re
investigating ancient Roman art and architecture.
Fifth grade
students have been working on writing and illustrating mini graphic “novels.”
Now, they’re beginning a different graphic design unit.

Third and
Fourth grade students are well-entrenched in messy papier
mache as they make Native American-inspired masks.

At Salem,
weekly art lessons and extended series of lessons work the students toward
attaining the NYS Learning Standards for the Arts. “Standards” has
a harsh ring to it, but standards are actually just directives that can be
broken down and simplified.

Elementary students move
through a sequence of projects and topics that build skills and understanding
in a logical progression—during the year, and on a grander scope,
throughout their years at Salem Washington Academy. Owing to differences in
ability and cognitive levels, there is room for adaptation and differentiation
within each lesson.
