Message from the Superintendent

October 28, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We have received some emails and phone calls regarding concerns about a child in the Salem community testing positive for COVID-19. Per the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) the school district is not legally able to speak to any possible COVID-19 cases for children in our area, nor our own students. For students in our school, we are only able to inform you of the impact any possible case will have on school closures or changes in the instructional model.

At this time, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Salem schools. Out of an abundance of caution, we did reach out to the Washington County Health Department. After consulting with them, the school remains open this week. If the situation changes, we will notify parents of the change and move to fully remote learning for at least 24 hours to allow contact tracing and to disinfect and deep clean the school building before returning to our hybrid learning model.

The district takes several measures to ensure the health and safety of children and adults who attend school in Salem. Our screening protocols have been effective. Our enhanced cleaning measures have ensured that our instructional areas are clean and disinfected. We continue to practice good respiratory and hand hygiene for all students, faculty, and staff.

If your child has a fever or has multiple symptoms that are related to COVID-19 at home, please do not send your children to school. Contact the school to let us know about your situation, so we can advise you according to your situation.

Keeping COVID out of school requires the promotion of social distancing, the wearing of masks/face coverings, and had washing while the students are not in school. Please help us keep our school health, safe, and open to in-person learning.

Thank you for your continued support of the school district. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions and concerns.
