Coach Charles Perry Honored at Board of Education Meeting

Coach Charles Perry was recognized by Salem Central School District’s Board of Education with a resolution of thanks and appreciation at the regular board meeting on Wednesday, June 15, 2022.

Coach Perry served the district as a physical education teacher, athletic director, and coached numerous sports from August 1960 until June 1991. During his tenure, Coach Perry took a special interest in promoting all athletic opportunities for students in coaching numerous sports including basketball, football, cross country and track and field.

During his distinguished coaching career, he was part of multiple championship teams, including sectional championships in track and field in 1971-1973, and undefeated cross country teams for two years beginning in 1965.

Coach Perry is worthy of special recognition for his contributions to the successful boys and girls varsity basketball programs through his coaching youth basketball at the elementary and modified levels for nearly fifty years. His passion for teaching the correct fundamentals at this level is something to be emulated by future coaches.

In addition to serving the students of Salem, Coach Perry has served the Salem Community in distinguished fashion including serving as one of the original Rotarians in 1967, assisting with the development of the Rotary Exchange Program; and one of the original founding members of the April Fools Race. Coach Perry continues to serve the community by teaching swimming, pingpong, and juggling at Lunch, Learn and Play; and continues to provide instruction to students in the discus event.

Coach Perry has contributed countless hours to the community as a deacon at church, assisting with dinner planning for the fuel fund, and tutoring students in algebra in preparation for Regents exams.

A resolution of thanks and appreciation was adopted June 15, 2022, by the Salem Central School District Board of Education at a regularly scheduled meeting.

A plaque will be permanently mounted in the gymnasium lobby in the winter of 2022 in honor and recognition of Coach Charles Perry’s contributions.
