The Salem Central School building requires roof repairs to continue serving future generations of students. The Capital Project will address these repairs, allowing us to use state aid and minimize the financial impact on the community. The estimated cost of the project is $8.15 million.
The Capital Project will require voter approval. The proposition around this Capital Project will appear on the 2025-2026 School Budget ballot. The vote will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Room 418 at Salem Central School High School. Please use the circle entrance on Warren Street to enter.
The Capital Project proposed on the ballot will finance much-needed replacements of our roofs. Since the main school building opened in 1938 and the primary school in 1955, the roofs have endured many decades of wear and tear. Substantial sections of our roofs have not been replaced since 1987, leading to leaks and disrupted learning. The district is proposing a capital project of $8,150,000 for roof replacements. By pursuing this as a capital project, state aid will cover 80.1% of the cost and minimize the impact on taxpayers.
Salem is a district with a rich history, and updates to our aging school building help to preserve that legacy. The decision to bring this proposal to voters was reached after receiving the results of the roof inspections during our Building Conditions Survey this year. The safety and integrity of our facilities remain a top priority.
White spots show the roof patching compounds, yet leaks persist. The light grey areas, resembling ice, are low spots where foam spray granules have collected. | In the gymnasium, the maintenance team has set up tarps to catch leaking water and funnel it into hidden buckets in the stands. | Leaks too significant to repair have led to ceiling tile falling in our halls. |
