National Bullying Prevention Month

Every Friday at Salem schools, students gather in Circle, a dedicated space where they share their feelings and experiences with their classmates. During National Bullying Prevention Month, the impact of this time together feels especially meaningful.

“When people are talking in Circle, I learn more about them, and it makes me feel more attached to them. It puts me in a positive mood,” ninth-grader William Ridler said.

Circle is facilitated by Pat Fish, the Sweethearts & Heroes Community Ambassador for Salem Central School District. With a background in organizational psychology, Fish guides students through meaningful conversations that promote empathy, mutual understanding, and peer support.

“As the Community Ambassador, my primary goal is to spread hope and create a community where students have a strong peer network of support,” said Fish. “I’m enthusiastic about visiting Salem weekly because of how much progress the district has already made.”

Sweethearts & Heroes is a national organization dedicated to preventing bullying and building stronger school communities through the development of empathy, compassion, and teamwork. Circle is a core component of the Sweethearts & Heroes program.

“Sweethearts & Heroes has played a key role in creating a positive and inclusive environment by bringing students together to support one another,” Jr/Sr High School Principal William Moore said.
