On April 21, the Salem Board of Education approved a proposed budget for the 2026–2027 school year that preserves all current programs and staffing levels while strategically leveraging state aid to expand student opportunities.

A central focus of the proposal is increased investment in student programming, including the expansion of universal prekindergarten (Pre-K) access and support for increased participation in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.

“Through increased state aid opportunities, we will be able to offer a Pre-K slot to all eligible students in the district. We are excited to welcome them as they begin their educational journey,” said Elementary Principal Katie Jones.

As students progress through the district, Salem remains committed to providing each learner with unique opportunities to pursue their goals. Through partnerships with the regional BOCES, the district is able to share resources, expand program offerings, and ensure students have access to high-quality opportunities comparable to those available in larger districts.

“I've always known that I love to work with animals. As soon as I saw that BOCES offered a Small Animal Science program, I just automatically knew I wanted to do that as a sophomore. I've learned a lot in and out of the classroom,” said Salem 12th grader Kaileigh Schwab.

Salem students are able to enroll in the over 20 CTE programs offered by Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES. During the 2025-2026 school year, 24 students enrolled in the program. Thirty-three students are currently requesting enrollment for the upcoming school year

“CTE programs are great for engaging students who know they want to work with their hands or pursue a specific career,” said Junior Senior High School Principal William Moore.

The budget proposal will appear on the ballot during the May 19 Annual School Budget Vote and School Board Election, along with the 2026-27 Bancroft Library Proposed Budget. Polls will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in High School Room 418. Additional information about the budget proposal is available on the school district’s website.
