To the Salem Central School District Community,
After a thorough review of the Salem Jr./Sr. High School master schedule, student course requests, and feedback from students, families, and staff, we recognized that the original master schedule did not adequately meet the needs of all of our students.
As of today, the Salem Jr./Sr. High School master schedule has been revised. Students were given their new schedules this morning and began following them immediately.
While making significant changes to the schedule after the school year has begun is not ideal, these changes were necessary to assure that students have access to the courses they requested, can pursue courses aligned with their future goals, and remain on track to meet graduation requirements as those requirements change under the New York Inspires plan.
We understand that changes to a student's schedule can be disruptive, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of our students, families, and staff as we worked through this process. Our priority is to make sure that every student has a schedule that supports their academic progress and is given unique opportunities to pursue their goals and dreams.
To prevent this situation in the future, Salem CSD will complete the master scheduling process in July—well ahead of the school year. This expanded timeline will allow administrative and counseling teams to thoroughly review course requests, resolve conflicts, and test scheduling scenarios to ensure that student needs are addressed before classes begin in September.
We are confident that the revised schedule provides a stronger foundation for all students to access the courses that align with their future goals and prepare them for the future. We are committed to providing access to courses that align with student interests, helping them navigate and resolve scheduling conflicts, and supporting their academic goals so they remain on track to graduate on time.
If scheduling issues persist, or you have questions about the changes, please reach out to Interim Principal Katie Jones or Jr/Sr High School Counselor Kaycee Eastman. Thank you for your continued partnership and understanding as we work to support every Salem student.
Sincerely,
Julie A. Collier
Superintendent of Schools
