Over the weekend, 23 Salem students performed in the All-County Band alongside student musicians from other local school districts. Elementary students were accepted into the All-County Band by recommendation, while junior and senior high students auditioned for placement. Eighth grader Ryan Coburn performed on flute with the senior high group, and fellow eighth grader Theo LeBlanc played baritone in both the junior and senior high sections. Congratulations to all of our talented student-musicians!

Celebrated Anna Maxwell at the Adirondack Area School Boards Association dinner where she received a Community Service Award. Congrats Anna! #SalemPride

Members of our local volunteer emergency services visited students in grades 8–12 to discuss how they can get involved with their organizations and to highlight the importance of civic duty and volunteerism in our community.
Students can begin participating as junior members, with eligibility starting at age 14 for the fire department and age 16 for EMS. At 18, individuals who complete the necessary training can become full members of any of the departments.
Thank you to Salem Volunteer Fire Department, Hebron Volunteer Fire Company, Rupert Volunteer Fire Department, Shushan Vol. Fire and Salem EMS for sending representatives to talk to our students. They are the next generation of volunteer emergency service members, and we look forward to seeing them follow in the footsteps of past graduates by joining these indispensable organizations.

Our students have been having a great time at the Caffe Lena On The Road Intergenerational Concert Series, a unique collaboration made possible through a grant and the combined efforts of the Historic Salem Courthouse, Caffe Lena, and Salem Washington Academy. This special series is designed to unite students and senior citizens through the joy of live music.
The high school chorus will join the concert on May 15 at 1:15 PM, and the fourth grade on May 28 at 1:15 PM. All concerts will take place at the Historic Salem Courthouse. Seniors are invited to arrive at noon to enjoy lunch before being joined by students for the performances!

UPDATE. The overview and Q&A at the West Hebron Firehouse for the Budget/Capital Project Vote will be on TUESDAY, MAY 13, 2025 @ 6pm. Sorry for the omission on the last post. Tell your friends and neighbors! Hope to see you there!

Mrs. Maxwell’s agriculture students recently partnered with our fourth graders to help beautify the community! Together, they prepared seeds for two local gardens: the Courthouse Community Garden and the Lunch, Learn & Play Garden. The high schoolers prepared seedlings for the younger students, who will care for them until planting day in early June.
We are proud to see our students learning, growing, and giving back—one seed at a time!

Thanks to the support of our community partners, several of our students were cruising around on new bikes over the break! Bikeatoga generously donated the bikes, Elizabeth St. John from Washington County Public Health provided helmets, and Officer Billy gifted safety materials. When students arrived to pick up their bikes, Washington County Public Health offered a hands-on safety lesson, and volunteers made sure each child’s helmet fit right.
Moments like these remind us how our school is more than just a place of learning; it is a place that brings us together. We are grateful to everyone who helped make this happen for our students!

Save the date! The 2025-2026 Budget Vote, Capital Project and BOE Election will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 in Room 418 at Salem Washington Academy.

We had a special visit from Bianca, the therapy dog! Along with her owner, Kiki Perkins, Bianca stops by to spread joy, reduce stress, and support our students through meaningful, engaging lessons. She especially loves reading with students and makes a wonderful, encouraging reading buddy!

Maxwell's Market officially opened for business in our Agricultural Science class! Students were tasked with designing a farm that incorporates sustainable practices and selecting products they could sell at the farmer’s market. While the market was open, students took turns playing the roles of sellers and buyers.
This hands-on activity allowed students to learn about key aspects of running an agricultural business, including marketing, customer service, and record-keeping. Now, they’re analyzing their expenses and revenue to determine whether they made a profit.
